Why Cultivar Names Are Not Enough

A cultivar name can carry reputation and history, but identity work needs a measured sample record behind the name.

Cultivar names move through the market faster than sample records do. A name can describe reputation, lineage story, or buyer expectation, but the name alone does not measure whether two plants are genetically the same.

The same name can be attached to different plant material. The same genotype can also travel under multiple names. Without a measured identity layer, those situations are hard to separate from ordinary naming noise.

What better documentation looks like

  • Record the submitted cultivar name exactly as it is used.
  • Capture source notes and known aliases at the time of submission.
  • Keep sample IDs, collection dates, and handling notes tied to the DNA record.
  • Update the record when new context appears instead of rewriting history.
